The Importance of Supporting the Oregon Maritime Museum
Since 1980, Oregon Maritime Museum (OMM) has preserve important maritime artifacts like the fully restored, operational, steam powered ship assist tug boat, Steamer Portland. At present this is the only operational ship of its kind in the nation. We permanently feature the history of World War II ship building, the battleship Oregon, and we celebrate the past, present and future of local maritime activities.
Obtaining a yearly membership is the perfect way to be a part of this movement to preserve maritime history especially if you are not physically able to volunteer your time or because of time constraints due to a busy work schedule.
Since COVID, OMM has struggled financially to maintain its mission. During the COVID years OMM lost revenue due to the riots, increased homelessness and increased in crime in downtown Portland. Your membership dues will help by creating a steady revenue base of revenue to recover museum operations, collections management, exhibits, educational programs and ship yard repairs for the Steamer Portland.
In the future, OMM hope to achieve the following:
- Restore total operations of the Portland Steamer (which is nearly completed).
- Remove the Museum from the Steamer Portland into a building owned by OMM.
- Restore smaller historical boats that are significant to the history of City of Portland and vintage military boats.
