Brad Duval, OMM President

My wife was taking a film making course at PSU when she decided to make a small documentary about life on the river. She researched most of her information from the Oregon Maritime Museum (OMM) Library at the time. I became involved when I agreed to do the interviews of the Captains and the men that were instrumental in the restoration of the Steamer Portland owned by OMM. I was fascinated by the fact that the ship actually function as a ship assist tug boat instead of a passenger ship. I could not understand the concept of a stern wheeler (paddle wheel) being a ship assist tug boat until I looked into the history of the paddle wheel boats and discovered they were the first tug boats.

Oregonians do not realize the significants of this history or the fact that the Steamer Portland is the only operational steam powered, stern wheel, ship assist tug boat in the United States. As I was working aboard the ship as a laborer, I fell in love with it, in terms of its history and what an engineering marvel it is. There are several OMM volunteers in love with the ship for the same or different reasons.  When the previous President of OMM, Susan Spitzer, stepped down in 2018, no one else seemed interested in being President. I decided to run for President because I did not want to see the ship in the scrap yard. During my presidency, I faced COVID19, rioting in Waterfront Park where the ship is docked,  an increase in crime and a severe revenue shortage but I am determined to keep the dream of its operation alive!

I was very athletic when I was younger but now that I am retired my hobbies are walking with my wife and dog along the river and coastal beaches;  occasionally playing tennis, basketball or going to the gym (this doesn't happen that often) so I can prove to others, "I still got it!".
